SUPPORTING CAREER RELATED LEARNING TO ALL PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN WEST CUMBRIA

THE WORLD REALLY IS YOUR OYSTER

For the children of Ewanrigg Junior School the opportunity to explore the World of work became a reality yesterday.

Elizabeth and Caroline from KAEFER brought the World to Maryport, well actually 7 huge Globes into the school hall.

This inspiring full day workshop took the children through the tender process of a scaffolding project looking at all the different job roles in KAEFER. The morning started with a Geography quiz, designing the scaffolding, calculating measurements and costs. In the afternoon it was all about construction, with the project manager on site and the health and safety officer alongside the construction team set to construct the best scaffolding to secure the whole World.

During the process the children purchased materials to build the scaffolding, kept a track of costs, managed their budgets and made sure that the construction was safe.

Yvonne Birkett, a teaching assistant at the school remarked that
“It was very interesting to see the team building skills develop during the project, everyone had a part to play even the quiet ones, there was a role for everyone. I think the children really benefit from this kind of session, it teaches them not to give up even when things go wrong, this kind of practical experience helps them work together to get the best outcome”.

All the teams managed successfully to scaffold their Worlds but there had to be a winner. Enter head teacher, Yvonne Craig who after a nail biting five minutes inspection finally announced the winner. She was particularly taken by the attention to safety on this project and the fact that the team had identified a safety hazard and put in measures to protect their workforce. All in all a very successful session, their skills in communication, team work and leadership were all put to the test. We think with these skills they’ll all be winners in the World of Work.

Well Done Everyone and thanks to KAEFER.
