SUPPORTING CAREER RELATED LEARNING TO ALL PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN WEST CUMBRIA

FROM HARTLEY’S ICE CREAM TO MAKING LASERS – CHILDREN AT MONTREAL PRIMARY SCHOOL HAVE THEIR SIGHTS SET ON BIG CAREER DREAMS

Year 5 and 6 pupils from Montreal Primary School spent the morning trying out their interviewing skills to find out more about the career opportunities available in Cumbria. They were taking part in the school’s Dream Big — Aspirations day and alongside volunteers from local employers they considered their hopes and dreams for the future, dreaming big and learning important messages about trying hard and maintaining a positive attitude.
Claire Johnson from the Primary Business Partnership got the event off to a lively start by asking children to match jobs to the employers in the room, for example guessing which of the volunteers had a career which started with a paper round, then moved to working in a fruit and veg shop to milking cows, owning a restaurant and finally ending up as a secretary at Prima Uno.
Local business representatives volunteering for the session included:

• Angie Dean, Chloe Blinco, Lydia Drummond – Prima Uno
• Dominic Farrell – NSG Consulting

The children had a chance to interview the speakers and find out more about their fascinating careers before spending time thinking about their own dream jobs and for some courageous children, the opportunity to be interviewed in front of the whole class.
Chloe from Prima Uno and one of the volunteers sad:
I really enjoyed every second of it, I would love to get involved again in the near future!
