If you are not able to attend but would like to know more, please do get in touch. An outline of the new sessions is included below.

KS1: A Sense of Place

Join an introduction to the mine, iron and the jobs people do to extract it.  Follow the storyteller on an interactive journey to understand how a mine is made – including dressing up as miners and touring the site.
Then enjoy a free play session building with our foam bricks & boulders, drawing with stones to see the lovely colours they make, use Florencepaintmakers paint to take home a picture of the mine and read our underground books in the mine play area

KS2: An Artists Box of Geology

Discover how it took millions of years to create the materials for our Artists Box.  Investigate the materials and how they’ve been made – from the metamorphic roots of pencils to the sedimentary qualities of clay and paint made from sedimentary and igneous rocks.
This session is a great way of reinforcing the science curriculum around rocks and materials, combining it with a creative and fun practical application.
Includes Rock Investigation Station; Play with Clay; Cave Painting

KS2/3 A Picture of Mining

Explore the history of mining in our local area and how it has inspired artists within our communities.  Pupils will have the opportunity to discover the work of local artists before going on to create their own Pit Banner and think about how they represent communities.  At our Pit Investigation Station, they will use primary and secondary sources to research the history of the mine.
